Aviation Safety

LFVs air traffic control of the civil and military air traffic in Swedish airspace contributes to a safe, efficient and environmentally sound traffic flow 24 hours a day, all year round. Air traffic control is characterised by a high level of aviation safety and efficiency. In order to maintain aviation safety, LFV is continuously working on aviation safety at all levels and is constantly working towards the overall safety targets set by the EU and the Swedish Transport Agency.

Aviation Rules

Thanks to many years of experience and international cooperation, a comprehensive common regulatory framework for air navigation services could be developed. All civil aviation authorities and stakeholders have been involved in this work.

International regulatory framework

The international regulatory framework for civil aviation covers the whole world and is held together by the UN-based International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). ICAO issues standards and recommendations which nations then convert into applicable laws. As regards LFV and Sweden, the EU has assumed responsibility to convert ICAO standards and recommendations into applicable requirements.

Europe also has its own civil aviation organisation, the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), based in Cologne, Germany. EASA also acts as an umbrella organisation for all EU countries' aviation authorities. EASA is authorised by the EU to develop proposals for regulations which are then adopted by the EU.

National regulatory framework

In addition to the binding EU regulations and EASA clarifications, LFV also applies the national regulations based on the Aviation Act, the Aviation Ordinance and the Swedish Transport Agency's regulations governing all air navigation services in Sweden, both for military and civil aviation. All safety-critical elements of our operations are described in our manuals, procedures and instructions.

Aviation Security

LFVs security management system meets the requirements placed on our operations by national and international laws, rules and regulations, as well as our own internal security requirements. Among measures intended to support employees, the LFV security handbook provides support in day-to-day security work. LFV works methodically with risk management in order to be able to identify risks in an efficient and proactive manner. Our approach allows us to eliminate root causes and take cost-effective damage-prevention measures.

Many years of methodical work in the field of aviation safety have integrated an awareness of safety risks as a natural part of our day-to-day work, and this includes aviation security. All LFV employees have a responsibility to ensure that our operations are carried out in the best possible way in order to achieve the goal of the highest possible level of security. LFVs aviation security work also includes learning from others and following developments in order to introduce new working methods and new technologies, as well as disseminating LFVs know-how in this area. We work with our stakeholders to find the best practices and procedures with them.
